In preparation for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, the city of Welland along with the Toronto Pan Am Games planning committee commissioned the design of the Welland International Flatwater Centre. Project goals were to meet international and Pan Am Game competition requirements for all water sports, while optimizing the site for long-term and flexible use.
Located on the Welland Recreational Waterway, connecting Lake Erie toLake Ontario, the waterway boasts almost eight kilometers of deep, placid, and uninterrupted flatwater, making it an ideal spot for flatwater sports. The design of the site transitioned the Pan American Games venue into a year-round training facility for team Canoe Kayak Canada while also serving as a community recreational facility, utilizing the surrounding public park. The Welland International Flatwater Centre continues to hold international water sports competitions and championships, such as the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, as well as regattas, triathlons, training camps, and festivals.
